00814: Gypsum variety Selenite - Was $40 Now $20 Millington Quarry, Bernards Township, Somerset County, New Jersey Cabinet - 11.2 x 6.8 x 6.4 cm 402 grams Specimen status: Reserved Send an email with specimen number to order A gypsum crystal atop a basalt matrix.
Where cleaved the gypsum reveals a nearly water-clear
interior, so this specimen rightly earns the oft-misused
selenite variety name. Large for a New Jersey sample of
this species. The locality is now closed and being
refilled to become (what else?) a hosing development. A
few scratches and dings (recall gypsum has Mohs hardness =
2) but overall very good condition for such a soft
mineral. Loosely attached to matrix (wiggles like a loose
tooth) but does not appear to be in danger of immediate
detachment. Previous The Mineral
Cabinet dealer label with note on the rear
indicating 'self collected' by William Butkowski,
prior to about 2000 (when I obtained the specimen from The Arkenstone;
corresponding label included).
