20501: Andradite-Grossular - Was $16 Now $8 Madiawaya, Arrondissement of Tomora, Bafoulabé Cercle, Kayes Region, Mali Miniature - 4.4 x 3.8 x 2.8 cm 73 grams Specimen status: Available Send an email with specimen number to order A cluster of opaque, dark brown
andradite-grossular garnets, with the dominant
individual measuring 4.3 cm. Crystal faces have a waxy
to resinous luster and some are striated. Recall that
the precise garnet species usually cannot be assigned by
visual inspection alone; chemical analysis is needed.
Even then, the specimen may consist of zones comprised
of different garnet species, and/or these zones may not
be pure end members (i.e., not pure andradite or pure
grossular, but a garnet composition somewhere in between
the two). Natural pitting is present, but (ignoring the
base where the specimen was removed from matrix) overall
condition is very nice.
