27447: Epidote - Was
$36 Now $16 Maldeen, Ras Koh Mountains, Kharan District, Balochistan, Pakistan Small cabinet - 6.4 x 6.0 x 4.5 cm 204 grams Ex Angela Cannon Specimen status: Available Send an email with specimen number to order A deep green opaque, tabular epidote
crystal from the famous finds around 2013. Despite its
polycrystalline surface, this example has good luster.
Except for a few small contact areas, the specimen is
complete all around. The nearly octahedral shape of some
examples from this find suggested that they might be
pseudomorphs after magnetite. That some were also
attracted to a magnet - as this example is - further
fueled this speculation. However, detailed examination
ruled out the pseudomorph theory (no magnetite cores
were found). Instead, the magnetism is due to tiny
magnetite crystal inclusions. For about a year after the
initial find these were fairly abundant but good
examples at reasonable prices are hard to find now. Ex
Angela Cannon collection.
