34177: Hanksite - Was
$10 Now $5 Searles Lake, San Bernardino County, California Type locality for hanksite Miniature - 5.2 x 3.8 x 3.8 cm 97 grams Specimen status: Available Send an email with specimen number to order A nicely translucent, finely-formed
crystal of this uncommon evaporate mineral, for which
there are just twelve Mindat-reported localities.
Hanksite is hygroscopic (absorbs water from the air)
which results in a white coating and eventual
disintegration. Most example of this mineral you will
find on the market have been oiled to inhibit water
uptake, but (in my mind) this results in an unnatural
appearance (not to mention oil on the hands). This
example has not been oiled, but if stored in a sealed
plastic bag will be reasonably stable. No damage. The
locality is now closed for collecting, so future
production of hanksite specimens is uncertain.
