27268: Spodumene (variety Kunzite)
Pala Chief Mine, Pala District, San Diego County, California
Small cabinet - 6.3 x 3.9 x 1.8 cm (2.5 x 1.5 x 0.7 inches)
Weight - 86 grams
Specimen status: Sold

Here we have a nearly 100% gem quality kunzite with the excellent lavender color the Pala Chief Mine is famous for. As is common with kunzite, the color is especially intense when viewed or illuminated along the c-axis (second photo). According to the collection records, this specimen was mined in the 1920's; that its color remains so very intense after nearly a century is fantastic. The terminations are gently etched (as is also common with kunzite). The specimen is complete all around, except for one edge cleave along the back side. This cleave does not distract. A superb example for this species from this locality, especially in this price range!
