01855: Quartz and Albite (variety Cleavelandite)
Oceanview Mine, Pala District, San Diego County, California
Cabinet - 13.0 x 11.6 x 10.0 cm (5.1 x 4.6 x 3.9 inches)
Weight - 1466 grams (3.23 pounds)
Specimen status: Sold

This classic San Diego County pegmatite association specimen consists of a somewhat tabular, lightly smoky quartz crystal rising from a bladed albite (cleavelandite) matrix. The quartz is opaque to transparent, 12.5 cm in length, and doubly terminated. One termination is a simple prism, while the matrix end termination consists of numerous, parallel points. The prism termination has suffered some chipping (and the price reflects this), but otherwise the specimen is free of notable damage. Sits nicely for display on its massive albite base. I collected this specimen from the Oceanview dumps in February 2003.
