10577: Gypsum
Syracuse, Onondaga County, New York
Large cabinet - 29 x 23 x 4 cm (11.4 x 9.1 x 1.6 inches)
Weight - 1120 grams (2.47 pounds)
Specimen status: Sold

This approximately flat specimen is 100% grey to colorless, intergrown gypsum crystals, with individual crystals reaching 4.4 cm. Some of the crystals have slight natural bending, a phenomenon somewhat common with gypsum. The color and abundance of sulfate in this specimen lead me to believe it is a product of pyrite decomposition in the Marcellus shale locality. An incipient crack has been stabilized on the back, but otherwise there is no damage. A nice addition to a gypsum, New York state, or large specimen collection.
