16172: Cinnabar and Dolomite
Fenghuang County, Xiangxi, Hunan, China
Small cabinet - 8.2 x 6.4 x 3.9 cm (3.2 x 2.5 x 1.5 inches)
Weight - 180 grams (0.40 pounds)
Specimen status: Sold

This specimen features four cinnabar crystals on a bed of snow white, translucent dolomite. Two of the cinnabar crystals are lustrous, complete, and well-crystallized while the other two have flat, somewhat pitted faces (due to contacts; not damage). The largest cinnabar crystals is 1.3 wide. The colorless crystal carpet provides a nice contrast for the deep red cinnabars. Displays well, resting on the sawn base. (The matrix is quite tough so these specimens are often recovered with a diamond saw instead of explosives to minimize damage.) Overall quite good for the species and locality, especially at this price. Probably from the Chatian Mine.
