RF158: Fluorite
Okorusu Mine, Otjiwarongo District, Otjozondjupa Region, Namibia
Small cabinet - 6.0 x 4.8 x 2.3 cm (2.4 x 1.9 x 0.9 inches)
Weight - 55 grams (0.12 pounds)
ex Roy Foerster collection
Specimen status: Sold

A group of limpid, glassy fluorite crystals having light minty green cores and colorless surface zones. (Recall that fluorite color may be sensitive to the light source. This specimen was photographed under white LED light but may appear somewhat different in your mineral cabinet, depending upon the illumination.) The largest individual fluorite cube measures 3.2 cm along its edge. Within each fluorite corner is a roughly spherical, unidentified inclusion; perhaps some fluorite that deposited on the corner of the first generation (green) fluorite crystals before the later, colorless fluorite zone was deposited. Odd! Bright blue fluorescence under both shortwave and longwave UV. A little edgewear is noted under the hand lens, but overall pretty good condition. Can be displayed horizontally on its roughly flat base (fifth and sixth photos), but I prefer a vertical display as shown in the first three photos.
