16168: | Cinnabar, Quartz, and Dolomite Fenghuang County, Xiangxi, Hunan, China Small cabinet - 7.6 x 7.3 x 3.6 cm (3.0 x 2.9 x 1.4 inches) Weight - 210 grams (0.46 pounds) Specimen status: Sold A gray, silicified limestone matrix
hosts a carpet of opaque, snow white dolomite crystals,
upon which rest numerous blood red cinnabar crystals.
The dolomite crystals are distinctly curved are reach
about 4 mm. The contrasting cinnabar crystals have very
good luster, range from opaque to gemmy, and reach about
5 mm in size. Most are complete and some are contacted
and/or naturally corroded, but there is very little
identifiable damage. A single colorless quartz point is
also present. The matrix has been sawn, but this is
typically necessary to extract undamaged specimens when
the matrix is very tough. The sawn matrix provides a
perfect display base. Probably from the Chatian Mine.
