RF348: Pyrite pseudomorph and Pyrite with Sphalerite
TrepĨa Complex, Kosovska Mitrovica, District of Kosovska Mitrovica, Kosovo
Small cabinet - 9.3 x 5.6 x 4.9 cm (3.7 x 2.2 x 1.9 inches)
Weight - 386 grams (0.85 pounds)
ex Roy Foerster collection
Specimen status: Sold

This 'obelisk' specimen consists of numerous brilliantly lustrous, golden pseudomorphs of pyrite (many small crystals) which replaced larger, flat pyrrhotite crystals. The replacements were quite faithful; the hexagonal pyrrhotite shape remains obvious in many of the pyrite discs. Also present -- and providing excellent contrast -- are numerous sphalerite crystals, quite lustrous and having interesting growth features. Individual sphalerites reach about 2 cm across. Together the pyrite pseudomorphs and sphalerites form a vertical specimen which can sit on its base without needing a stand (but a stand would improve stability). The top, bottom, and a few scattered sphalerites are incomplete but overall this sparkly tower is in excellent condition. Previous dealer label with a $500 price tag.
