28844: 'Sandwich' Wulfenite and Calcite
Ojuela Mine, Mapimí, Mun. de Mapimí, Durango, Mexico
Miniature - 5.2 x 3.9 x 1.5 cm (2.0 x 1.5 x 0.6 inches)
24 grams with stand (0.05 pounds)
Specimen status: Sold

Here we have a rich example of 'sandwich' or 'Oreo' wulfenite crystals free of matrix, with individual crystals reaching about 7 mm in size. The wulfenite color zonation is due to an initial growth of brown wulfenite (the sandwich meat) with later epitaxial growth of surrounding yellowish wulfenite layers (the sandwich bread). Accented with scattered, small and gemmy, colorless calcites. Most likely from the limited 2017 find. Except for the usual edge issues (which are minor in this case) no damage. Currently mounted on an acrylic base (on which is displays quite nicely) but could easily be removed if desired.
