12710: Neptunite
Dallas Gem Mine, New Idria District, San Benito County, California
Miniature - 4.9 x 4.4 x 1.6 cm (1.9 x 1.7 x 0.6 inches)
14 grams (0.03 pounds)
Specimen status: Sold

Beautifully lustrous, mostly jet black neptunite crystals are scattered about a contrasting, snow white natrolite matrix. The largest neptunite is 2.0 cm and doubly terminated (last photo). Most of the other crystals have damaged terminations, or are not terminated at all. As is typical, this was etched out of the enclosing natrolite. The Dallas Gem Mine is closed to collecting, with little or no new material being produced. The available rough -- held mostly now by a single dealer -- is limited. Expect prices for this material (and especially fine benitoite specimens) to continue to climb.
