17185: Sphalerite, Chalcopyrite, and Pyrite
Joplin Field, Tri-state District, Jasper County, Missouri
Large cabinet - 15.7 x 9.5 x 2.6 cm (6.2 x 3.7 x 1.0 inches)
234 grams (0.52 pounds)
Specimen status: Sold

This sparkly specimen features dark to gemmy, red to brown sphalerite crystals completely covering the flat chert matrix, with individual crystals ranging from microscopic to 2.8 cm. Adding to the sparkle are brassy to tarnished chalcopyrites and cubic pyrites (both to a few mm in size).  Pyrite is uncommon for Joplin Field; Mindat has just four examples. Displays nicely horizontally without needing any support, but needs a stand if you prefer a vertical view. No damage.
