10638: Rhodochrosite
Pasto Bueno, Pampas District, Pallasca Province, Ɓncash, Peru
Miniature - 4.3 x 2.7 x 2.5 cm (1.7 x 1.1 x 1.0 inches)
28 grams (0.06 pounds)
Specimen status: Sold

This specimen is composed completely of rhodochrosite, with the display face being a cluster of opaque but sharp and quite pretty pink crystals. Individual crystals reach 1.8 cm in size and some have a slightly curved faces (so maybe this is manganoan dolomite instead of rhodochrosite?). The incomplete back shows growth began with redder material (purer rhodochrosite?) and later transitioned to this pink color (rhodochrosite with enough magnesium to be called manganoan dolomite?). Except for the usual base issues, no damage is seen. Sits nicely for display without needing additional support.
