| 00766: Haiweeite and Aragonite - $45 Animas Mine, Francisco Portillo, West Camp, Santa Eulalia Mining District, Aquiles Serdán Municipality, Chihuahua, Mexico Cabinet - 13.2 x 6.9 x 2.1 cm 133 grams Fluorescent (LW/SW) Mildly radioactive Specimen status: Reserved Send an email with specimen number to order A flat matrix is completely covered by
small aragonite crystals which are rendered lemon yellow
by abundant haiweeite inclusions. A previous dealer label
identifies the major mineral as gypsum (common at the
locality) but on this specimen the material produces
vigorous effervescence with dilute hydrochloric acid
(hence it cannot be gypsum). The same label identifies the
yellow inclusions as nováčekite (a micaceous mineral)
whereas examination of the specimen under magnification
reveals this material to be acicular and therefore more
likely to be haiweeite (but other yellow uranium species
may also be present). The specimen is mildly radioactive
and glows neon green under both longwave UV (blacklight)
and shortwave UV. Overall condition is very nice.
