16715:
Goethite pseudomorph after Pyrite - $24
Pelican Point Quarry, Pelican Point, Utah Lake, Utah County, Utah
Miniature - 5.4 x 5.4 x 4.2 cm (2.1 x 2.1 x 1.7 inches)
300 grams (0.66 pounds)

This specimen began as a rectangular pyrite crystal, which over time, was replaced by earthy-brown goethite in a way which retained the pyrite shape. Hence it is a pseudomorph. The original pyrite striations have been preserved. The condition is superb; the specimen lack the cracking which often accompanies the pyrite-to-goethite pseudomorphing process. (This may also indicate incomplete change. Sawing the specimen open may reveal a pyrite core.) This is a fairly large example for this classic locality.
