Calcite - $30 Stoneco Auglaize Quarry, Junction, Paulding County, Ohio Small cabinet - 7.1 x 5.8 x 5.0 cm (2.8 x 2.3 x 2.0 inches) 150 grams (0.33 pounds) Specimen status: Available Send an email with specimen number to order This calcite scalenohedron shows
excellent symmetry and growth features along the faces
which give a shimmering, bark-like texture. The cleaved
base reveals two generations of growth: a first
generation with scattered brown inclusions, and a later
generation which is translucent and almost opalescent,
but free of inclusions. The overall color is a light
brown, but becomes pleasingly brown-yellow when backlit.
Previous dealer label indicates the specimen was
collected circa 1965. A few minor dings are noted, but
do not detract, especially when the specimen is strongly
illuminated from behind. Sits nicely for display as
shown on its cleaved base.
