| 01847: Tourmaline - $40 Galiléia, Minas Gerais, Brazil Small cabinet - 7.4 x 4.9 x 4.6 cm 149 grams Specimen status: Available Send an email with specimen number to order This glassy, jet black tourmaline has
rather odd morphology: three distinct terminations,
equally distributed around the perimeter, like the jaws of
some fearsome sea creature or science fiction monster. The
shape is more interesting than my lousy photos suggest.
Although jet black tourmalines are frequently labeled as
schorl (a tourmaline species, not a variety) one cannot
determine the exact species visually; chemical analysis is
needed. Some damage to each of the termination 'jaws' and
incomplete where detached from base.
