19134:
Andradite-Grossular
Kayes Region, Mali
Miniature - 4.4 x 3.9 x 2.7 cm (1.7 x 1.5 x 1.1 inches)
75 grams (0.17 pounds)
Specimen status: Sold

A single yet complexly crystallized andradite-grossular garnet crystal, opaque and dark brown. Good luster. One cannot ascertain the precise garnet species by visual inspection alone; assignments are usually based on geological environment and similar specimens from the same find. In fact garnets often are not chemically pure but instead have zones of varying compositions. This specimen has no matrix and (ignoring the usual edge issues) also lacks damage. Sits nicely for display without needing a stand. This material was abundant a few years ago but much harder to find now.
