19551:
Barite and Marcasite
Bou Nahas Mine, Oumjrane Mining Area, Alnif, Alnif County, Tinghir Province, DrĂ¢a-Tafilalet, Morocco
Miniature - 4.9 x 4.6 x 3.6 cm (1.9 x 1.8 x 1.4 inches)
108 grams (0.24 pounds)
Specimen status: Sold

A bright and brassy marcasite matrix hosts numerous colorless and translucent barite crystals. The barites range from tiny (and sparkly) to 1.9 cm wide. Marcasite is often unstable and as it decomposes can crumble and emit nasty sulfurous odors; in this case the marcasite is stable (still bright, no powder or odor). The marcasite and barites combine for sparkle. A few tiny nicks are noted on some barites but otherwise the specimen is in fine shape overall. Several nice display angles not needing a stand are possible.
