Ulexite and Calcite - $26 Boron Open Pit, Boron, Kramer District, Kern County, California Small cabinet - 8.1 x 3.6 x 3.1 cm (3.2 x 1.4 x 1.2 inches) 58 grams (0.13 pounds) Ex Jim Minette collection Specimen status: Available Send an email with specimen number to order A vertical (or horizontal, if you
prefer) column composed of parallel, silky ulexite
fibers is decorated with a group of translucent, grayish
calcite crystals. These calcites have a somewhat
elongated shape, and like the ulexite, are somewhat
silky. Under shortwave UV, the calcite displays a
bluish-white fluorescence. The specimen sits
horizontally (as shown) or vertically; neither position
requiring a stand. Overall condition is quite good.
Material of this nature was at one time fairly common on
the mineral market - especially here in Southern
California - but with the locality being closed to
collecting for some years, these specimens - especially
those of quality - have become more scarce. From the
collection of noted Southern California borate
specialist Jim Minette.
