Fluorite - $80 Boltsburn Mine, Rookhope, Stanhope, County Durham, England Small cabinet - 11.0 x 8.7 x 6.1 cm 712 grams Specimen status: Available Send an email with specimen number to order A large, single fluorite crystal,
violet to (mostly) grey in color, and slightly frosty.
(Fluorite color tends to be dependent on illumination.
The photos seen here were taken under white LEDs, and so
the color you see in your mineral cabinet may be a bit
different.) Intergrown with a knob of brown to black
iron hydroxides/oxides. In some places the fluorite is a
thin layer - a millimeter or two in thickness over the
dark matrix, whereas in other spots there is nothing but
fluorite. Intense blue fluorescence under longwave UV;
milder, purpler fluorescence under shortwave. Somewhat
contacted on the back where removed from matrix, but no
significant damage is seen. Not the prettiest example
from this locality, but the size and fluorescence
intensity are notable.
