Calcite and Chalcopyrite - $20
Baisha Copper Mine, Huangshi, Hubei, China
Miniature - 5.0 x 3.5 x 3.2 cm

Specimen status: Available     Send an email with specimen number to order

The core of this specimen consists of crystalline calcite, with the two largest crystals being a dogtooth (scalenohedral) and a (roughly) discoid form. On the discoid calcite we find a nearly complete coverage of quite tiny, brownish chalcopyrites, whereas on the dogtooth the chalcopyrites are larger, tightly packed, and beautifully iridescent, have a peacock-like range of colors. The selective chalcopyrite overgrowth adds interest. Sits perfectly for display as shown on its naturally flat, cleaved calcite base. A few tiny chips on the tip of the main discoid calcite are noted, but otherwise no damage.
