Fluorite 'Artwork' - $30 De'an Fluorite Mine, Wushan, De'an County, Jiujiang, Jiangxi, China Miniature - 5.6 x 5.5 x 4.9 cm 176 grams Ex Carol and Ed Headley collection Specimen status: Available Send an email with specimen number to order This nicely translucent amber-brown
fluorite 'trailer hitch' specimen was sold as natural,
but the broad consensus among professional mineral
dealers is that it is faked. The method of production is
unclear, as it shows no tool marks or broken crystals. I
suspect it was produced by air abrasion, resulting is a
somewhat ovoid 'sphere' (4.4 x 3.9 cm). Examination
under either longwave or shortwave UV reveals a
blue-white fluorescence. Banded growth is also revealed;
the orientation of the bands is a strong hint this is an
'artwork' specimen. Regardless, it's neat and sits
nicely on its 'natural' fluorite base as shown. Ex Carol
and Ed Headley collection.
