This is a lab-grown ruby crystal cluster composed of numerous platy crystals. The color is excellent (generally agreed in the gem industry to be nearly indistinguishable from natural ruby) and it also has very strong red fluorescence under both shortwave and longwave UV (second photo). The cluster has a distinct curve because it formed against the edge of the curved platinum crucible. The lab production method involves growing from solution, much like natural ruby (hence 'cultured ruby', just like cultured pearls). It was produced many years ago by the J. O. Crystal company. Production ceased in 2002, and these little gems have become quite scare and desirable. Minimal, minor chipping on the back, otherwise no damage. Weighs 5.3 grams.
