01932: Gypsum, Barite, Calcite, Sphalerite
Casapalca Mine, Huarochiri Province, Lima Department, Peru
Large cabinet - 20 x 14 x 5 cm (7.9 x 5.5 x 2.0 inches)
Weight - 2114 grams (4.66 pounds)
Specimen status - Sold

This hefty specimen (2.11 kg or 4 pounds 10 ounces) features numerous elongated gypsum crystals, colorless and translucent, mostly terminated, reaching 3.7 cm in length. Some of these gypsums display fishtail twinning. Colorless, opaque calcites to about 2.5 cm are also seen. Patches of opaque, brown barite are scattered about.  All of this rests on a mixed sulfide matrix, which consists mostly of black, lustrous sphalerite crystals. A few of the lesser gypsum terminations are bruised (expected for such a soft mineral) but otherwise no damage is noted. Displays quite nicely lying flat, without needing a stand. A busy Peruvian association specimen!
