09849: Sklodowskite, Gypsum, and Calcite
Animas Mine, West Camp, Santa Eulalia District, Mun. de Aquiles Serdán, Chihuahua, Mexico
Large cabinet - 18 x 11.4 x 6.0 cm (7.1 x 4.5 x 2.4 inches)
Specimen status: Sold

This specimen features a knobby, crystalline calcite matrix which is  partially covered by a lemon yellow, distinctly radioactive mineral. The original dealer label identifies the yellow as nováčekite (and the locality as Chihuahua, Mexico) but based on Mindat information and my previous experience with this material the yellow is actually sklodowskite. Atop the sklodowskite is a transparent gypsum coating. (The sklowdowskite/gypsum association is well-documented at the Animas Mine.) The color is less white than the photos suggest. No damage to the display surface of this large example.
