The Red River Floodway excavations have long been a classic Canadian gypsum locality, noted for lovely amber to golden-yellow gypsum specimens with excellent fluorescence and phosphorescence. Here we have a specimen from that locality, featuring two fused gypsum blade 'balls' and a 'head' of much larger, amber-colored, transparent gypsum blades. The 'head' crystals reach about 3.2 cm. The entire specimen appears somewhat like a primitive sea creature. Strong yellowish fluorescence under both shortwave and longwave UV (second picture, but in person much brighter). When the UV is removed, distinct phosphorescence (continued light emission) occurs for several seconds. (Red River Floodway gypsums have just about the most spectacular phosphorescence in the mineral world.) A few cleaved crystals scattered about, but not significant at this price. Previous dealer label with a $240 price tag. A must-have for any collector of gypsum, fluorescent minerals, sulfates, or Canadian minerals.
