23489: Goethite epimorph after Gypsum -
$24 Santa Eulalia Mining District, Aquiles Serdán Municipality, Chihuahua, Mexico Small cabinet - 7.5 x 6.2 x 5.5 cm 208 grams Specimen status: Available Send an email with specimen number to order This specimen began as a cluster of
gypsum crystals up to almost 3 cm wide, which become
covered with a think black goethite crust. Later the
gypsum dissolved away leaving their imprints in the
goethite. Hence, this is an epimorph. Often stated to be
an 'epimorph after selenite' ('selenite' should **only**
be applied to transparent gypsum), but because we cannot
determine if the gypsum was transparent, we cannot say the
gypsum was selenite. A classic for the locality, which
sits perfectly for display at numerous angles not needing
a stand.
