This is a lab-grown ruby crystal cluster composed of numerous blocky crystals. The color is excellent (generally agreed in the gem industry to be nearly indistinguishable from natural ruby) and it also has very intense red fluorescence under both shortwave and longwave UV (third photo). The lab production method involves growing from solution, much like natural ruby (hence 'cultured ruby', just like cultured pearls). It was produced many years ago by the J. O. Crystal company. Production ceased in 2002, and these little gems have become quite scare and desirable. No damage.
