A cleft in matrix hosts three sharp and glassy, doubly terminated Herkimer diamond quartz crystals. The largest 'diamond' is 2.4 cm across. The utter clarity of these quartz crystals explains why these specimens have earned the name 'Herkimer diamonds'. The photos just don't adequately capture this clarity. The brownish veil on this largest quartz appears to be an iron hydroxide intrusion into a crack which later healed (because this stain does not change when the specimen is treated with chemicals that removed iron hydroxide stains elsewhere on the specimen). The matrix is rendered sparkly with a carpet of thousands of tiny, glittering quartz crystals. Unlike many other Herkimer clusters, this one has no glue; it hasn't been 'repaired', 'restored', 'reassembled' or otherwise faked. No damage. Sits beautifully for display. A fine example of sparkle for your mineral cabinet.
