A cleft in limonite matrix hosts
several sharply-formed köttigite-symplesite crystal
clusters. These were later covered with gypsum (variety
selenite) so clear that the köttigite-symplesite (where
covered) remains clearly visible. This gypsum is has
distinct crystal faces and is not just a cleavage section.
Köttigite - Zn3 (AsO 4 ) 2 ·8H 2 O
and its iron analog symplesite - Fe3(AsO4)2·8H2O
cannot be distinguished visually and are often intergrown.
